Project Background and Scope

ACMD is a purpose-built facility that supports projects which align to the focus areas of medical bionics, regenerative medicine and drug design and delivery. Replacing existing buildings within the campus of St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, the biomedical research centre will focus on chronic disease prevention, early intervention, and the use of robotic, digital and data engineering to deliver innovative healthcare through equitable access with the advantage of having clinicians directly accessible.
ACMD comprises of three stages, the first being the Decant Works to enable demolition of the existing Aikenhead Wing and Brennan Hall Building, Early Works comprising of demolition of the existing Aikenhead Building and Brennan Hall Building and Main Works to deliver a new purpose-built multi-level tower.

Project Challenges

The decanting and demolition stage of the project requires extensive Hazmat removal including contaminated soil under the subfloor of the existing building which is a risk for both cost and programme.

MBM Solutions

During cost planning, MBM conducted market testing for the demolition and hazmat removal of the Aikenhead building. This provided certainty to the Hazmat Removal Contingency that was proposed to the Client. During construction, MBM have closely monitored the expenditure and ensure that the Client is being updated for any cost movement and risk through our monthly cost reporting.
