Project Background and Scope

The Bathurst Health Service Redevelopment is a major investment in expanding and modernising health care for the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD). The project focuses on upgrading and extending existing facilities to better meet the growing health needs of the Bathurst region and surrounding rural communities.

Key components of the redevelopment include:

  • Expansion of acute inpatient services
  • Enlargement of the Emergency Department (ED)
  • Upgrades to Ambulatory Care, Rehabilitation, Pre-operative Services, and Diagnostic Services
  • Improved infrastructure designed to deliver patient- and resident-focused care
  • A health facility with high functional efficiency, tailored to the needs of a regional and rural environment

This redevelopment supports WNSWLHD’s long-term vision to keep people healthier in their communities, and to provide integrated, high-quality, and accessible clinical care.

Project Challenges

As with any major upgrade to an operating health facility, this project presents several unique challenges

  • Maintaining Clinical Operations: Ensuring the hospital remains fully functional during staged construction works.
  • Space Constraints: Managing limited site availability while introducing expanded clinical services and modern infrastructure.
  • Stakeholder Alignment: Balancing the needs of clinicians, administrators, and the broader community in a regional context.
  • Future Flexibility: Designing for current needs while planning for future growth and adaptability in service delivery.

MBM Solutions

MBM worked closely with project stakeholders to deliver solutions that balanced cost, functionality, and long-term performance. Our team supported the project with:

  • Strategic Cost Planning: Provided early-stage cost advice to align design with budget and ensure value for money across the board.
  • Staged Delivery Strategy: Assisted in planning construction phases to minimise impact on day-to-day hospital services.
  • Regional Value Focus: Recommended practical, cost-effective materials and solutions suited to the rural setting and available resources.
  • Risk and Contingency Advice: Identified cost and delivery risks early, helping the client manage scope and budget throughout
