Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre is a division of Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR). Questacon has a huge array of assets which operate and are used in very different ways and contexts. With assets stored across three Questacon buildings and no divisional standard for the management, lifecycle, ideal condition, or end-of-life condition for asset, the assets are managed on an ad hoc basis, separately by various teams, which results in inefficiency and inconsistency

MBM were engaged by Questacon to  deliver a comprehensive report including an Asset Management Plan, stating a summary of the asset management environment, review of dependencies, and recommendations on a number of key strategies including asset management principals to be established, long-term asset strategic and budget-planning , creation of a Questacon-wide asset register and an implementation strategy and plan for the recommendations.

The AMP defined the scope of asset-related activities across various categories, enabling Questacon to manage its portfolio efficiently and effectively.

Project Background and Scope

Questacon is widely recognised for delivering high-quality, interactive STEM experiences to audiences across Australia. These are facilitated through its flagship visitor centre in Canberra, a suite of national touring initiatives, and a robust portfolio of digital programs. To sustain and elevate these offerings, Questacon commissioned a comprehensive Asset Management Plan (AMP) to articulate the alignment between its organisational, operational, sustainability, programmatic, and asset management goals—ultimately supporting enhanced decision-making, financial certainty, and long-term value for both the agency and the broader community.

Project Challenges

In addition to being housed across three Questacon facilities, a significant portion of the physical assets are regularly transported throughout Australia and internationally. This dynamic movement necessitates a tailored asset management strategy, which introduced unique complexities for the project.

MBM Solutions

To mitigate the challenges, MBM’s approach was methodical and collaborative. The team commenced with an initial discovery phase, engaging with key stakeholders and different divisions to gain insight into existing practices, challenges, and expectations. This included a thorough audit of current assets classes, identifying any that may not be captured in existing registers. MBM employed industry best practices to categorise assets effectively, assess asset classes, and examine interdependencies to ensure a holistic understanding of Questacon’s asset landscape.
MBM provided Questacon with a newly prepared AMP and optional Asset Register aligned to ISO 55001 and Questacon’s strategic priorities, creating improved decision making, cost certainty and value enhancement for its diverse stakeholder groups.
