Project Background and Scope

The Griffith Base Hospital Redevelopment (GBHR) is a major health infrastructure project in the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD), aimed at delivering modern, integrated, and expanded health services for the growing regional community.

The redevelopment includes:

  • New buildings and refurbishment of existing hospital infrastructure
  • Expanded inpatient, surgical, ambulatory care, and critical care services
  • Consolidation of ageing, disconnected buildings into a single, modern, and highly functional facility

This upgrade is one of the highest priorities on MLHD’s asset strategy, and it is central to strengthening the role of Griffith Health Service (GrHS) as a key regional health provider.

The project is being delivered in multiple stages.

Project Challenges

As with any large-scale hospital redevelopment, GBHR has presented some key challenges, particularly given its regional location and complex staging:

  • Phased Delivery: Balancing the need to maintain ongoing hospital operations while staging demolition, refurbishment, and new construction works.
  • Ageing Infrastructure: Integrating new facilities with legacy systems and building fabric.
  • Regional Supply Chain: Navigating local contractor availability and longer procurement lead times.

Complex Site Logistics: Managing construction activities within a live health environment, with restricted access and safety considerations

MBM Solutions

MBM has played a vital role in keeping the project on track—financially and strategically—while preparing the project team for smooth delivery of the next stage:

  • Strong Financial Management: Guided the project through tendering with detailed cost planning, risk analysis, and value engineering to ensure the project remained in a strong financial position.
  • Staging Strategy Support: Helped structure delivery phases to reduce disruption to clinical services and support continuity of care.
  • Regional Experience: Applied knowledge from similar rural health redevelopments to manage local market limitations and identify cost-saving opportunities.

Client-Side Leadership: Positioned senior members of the MBM team—such as James—to lead during critical project stages, and to be freed up for the next challenge as GBHR moves confidently into the final phase of delivery
