Assistant Quantity Surveyor at MBM, Imandee Jaywardena, has swiftly made her presence felt in Australia’s property and construction sector since arriving only nine months ago. The young cost manager was nominated for two awards at Thursday night’s 2024 NAWIC NSW Awards for Excellence. A finalist for the Laing O’Rourke Future Leader Scholarship, Imandee received the John Holland University Scholarship after being nominated alongside finalists Cynthia Xirocostas and Meg Curotta.
Surrounded by a crowd of industry leaders, Imandee was honoured to be commended on her educational accomplishments amongst the extraordinary women in construction. During her acceptance, she delivered a thoughtful speech that applauded the Australian construction industry. “I’ve had the privilege of being exposed to construction industries across the globe, and I’ve never been more supported than here in Australia – the land of hope”, she declared.
The award highlights Imandee’s demonstrated potential to contribute and lead in construction. Imandee’s accomplishments reflect her determination to challenge traditional gender barriers and make a meaningful impact in the sector. In her tertiary studies and role at MBM, she has educated and uplifted women through mentorship, industry speaking engagements, and volunteer efforts across professional bodies. The scholarship will help Imandee empower women in the industry to overcome shared obstacles through her pursuit of a course in construction and contract law at Western Sydney University.
After applying for 45 internships to no success, Imandee walked into MBM’s Western Sydney office and asked for a job. Impressed by her approach, Director Xan Duong offered her a professional opportunity, and she now works part-time at MBM while pursuing her Bachelor of Construction. Imandee has gone above and beyond to advance her acumen and dedicates significant time to advocate for young women to pursue careers in construction. She regularly speaks at events for high school and university students, and supports women studying quantity surveying in her cohort.
Western Sydney University Associate Professor Payam Rahnamayiezekavat highlighted Imandee’s exceptional contributions during her first year as a student. “Imandee’s academic performance has been exceptional. However, what truly sets Imandee apart is her commitment to engaging with and contributing to both our university and the broader NSW community.”
Speaking on the night, MBM’s CEO David Pearson applauded Imandee’s academic accomplishments and potential to shine in the next generation of construction leaders.“The entire MBM team congratulates Imandee on her outstanding achievements and celebrates her success. Imandee is on her way to becoming a future leader, and her receipt of the John Holland University Scholarship marks an exciting phase in her career advancement.”
