Project Background and Scope

The Sydney Biomedical Accelerator (SBA) is an ambitious and transformative initiative designed to integrate cutting-edge research, clinical care, and education. As a collaboration between the University of Sydney (USYD), Sydney Local Health District and the NSW Government it aims to address some of the most pressing global health challenges such as cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and vision-related diseases by fostering innovation through shared resources and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Set to open in 2028, the SBA will be strategically located across the University of Sydney’s Camperdown Campus and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH). Coinciding with the $940m redevelopment of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the SBA is expected to significantly elevate the state’s research and healthcare infrastructure.

The proposed development includes:

  • The Isaac Wakil Biomedical Building (IWBB): will be located on the USYD campus comprising over 8 floors for physical containment level 2 (PC2) wet lab research, mortuary and advanced anatomy teaching, clinical research facilities, core research facilities and plant space.
  • Building B will be located on the RPAH site consisting of over 8 floors of primarily PC2 laboratories with a specialist PC3 laboratory, biobank facility and plant space.
