Geelong’s pipeline of major projects turns from plans to progress as construction continues on the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre. Development Victoria spearheads the public-private partnership which will bring the Nyaal Banyul precinct to life and connect Geelong’s CBD to its waterfront. Once built, Nyaal Banyul will feature a 1000-seat plenary with multi-use space to host a lineup of conventions, exhibitions, trade shows, and live events – and to top it off – retail stores for food and beverage offerings, and a Crowne Plaza hotel.
In 2022, MBM was appointed to deliver cost advisory expertise, alongside facilities and asset management advisory services on the purpose-built entertainment hub. The site comprises three levels including a basement carpark, ground floor Plenary Hall, multi-purpose Exhibition Halls, front-of-house foyer and pre-function area, meeting and hospitality rooms, and banquet space. MBM’s quantity surveying and advisory teams, led by Director Lee Williams and Associate Tony Del Nevo, are thrilled at Nyaal Banyul’s progress towards completion after working closely with Development Victoria.
Lee and his team, including Director Edna Yeo, Associate Lyn Yang and Assistant Quantity Surveyor Milad Elyasi have delivered strategic cost guidance to ensure the project’s success. MBM’s cost experts provided cost planning, tender evaluations, and construction phase services. Tony Del Nevo and Assistant Project Advisor Kevyn Halim delivered facilities and asset management guidance including scope development, key performance indicator requirements, service readiness requirements, operating term plan requirements, facilities and asset management cost estimations, in addition to lifecycle costs and handback requirements.
To be operated by the Victorian Convention and Event Trust (VCET), Nyaal Banyul will stand tall on the city’s waterfront. The $449m development will be a welcoming venue for domestic and international visitors and drive regional development.
Lee shared his anticipation for Nyaal Banyul’s completion, and the doors that the project will open for Geelong’s community. “It’s been a fantastic experience to support Development Victoria on such a transformative regional project. The Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre precinct will unlock a trove of economic, lifestyle, and cultural opportunities for the local community. The development will pave the way for job creation, the best in live entertainment, and propel the city’s continuous expansion in the years to come.”
The Nyaal Banyul development is ongoing with the entertainment venue’s doors set to open in 2026.
The Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre is funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments and City of Greater Geelong through the Geelong City Deal. It is being delivered by Development Victoria in partnership with the Plenary Conventions consortium and Built as head contractor. The centre will be operated by the Victorian Convention and Event Trust.
