Project Background and Scope

The Albury Base Hospital project is a jointly funded project for the health services by VIC and NSW governments with overall budget of $558m. The redevelopment on the existing Albury Hospital site will provide clinical services such as additional Operating theatres, new CSSD, IPU’s, ICU, Cath Lab, Older Person Mental Health IPU, Education and Training, expansion of existing Pathology and Pharmacy, new Ambulatory Care, consolidated Birthing, Maternity and NICU. Furthermore, the project will provide refurbishment spaces for JMO, Transit Lounge, Expanded ED etc. The project will provide on-grade car parking spaces.

Project Challenges

Delivering this project within a live hospital environment brought several logistical and financial challenges, especially around the temporary relocation (decanting) of essential departments. MBM worked closely with the project team to find cost-effective solutions that reduced disruption and delivered real value for money.

MBM Solutions

MBM collaborated proactively with the project team and Albury-Wodonga Health Service to implement early planning measures that significantly reduced the need for unnecessary relocations. Following strategic evaluation, the decision was made to invest in permanent facilities for allied health and administrative functions, offering a more cost-effective solution by minimising long-term hire and setup expenditures. MBM conducted comprehensive value-for-money assessments and presented alternative decanting options to optimise both initial and ongoing costs. The resulting decant strategy was carefully aligned with the broader program objectives and budget parameters, mitigating risk and enhancing overall delivery efficiency.
