The Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) is delivering an $801m investment to provide 260 new acute public mental health beds following key findings from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System report.

The significant project provides care for a further 2,500+ patients, reducing pressure on emergency departments, and providing additional support to people requiring immediate mental health assistance.

Spearheaded by Director Lee Williams, MBM provided VHBA with comprehensive cost management services for the Pathways Program to deliver additional capacity for mental health services across four existing facilities – the McKellar Centre, Northern Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH).

To expedite delivery, the three new build projects adopted modular construction methodologies, with RMH constructed traditionally due to its vertical expansion and refurbishment scope. All projects were delivered under Managing Contractor procurement with the first of the facilities at the McKellar Centre completed in Mid-2022 and the final project at RMH completed in early 2024

Speaking on the project, Lee said “The Mental Health Beds Expansion Program deliver key facilities and services and will have lasting, positive impacts on the community.”

“With an extensive history of supporting state health projects, the MBM team is proud of our continued work in championing improved health services and greater access to vital care”, he added.
