AKIN is a First Nations-led design group comprised of Yerrabingin, Architectus, Flying Fish Blue, Hunt Quietly, Studio Chris Fox, and Arup.

In 2023, the NSW Government held a design competition for Barangaroo Harbour Park. AKIN’s winning design presented an elemental landscape marked by diverse features of the natural environment. The proposed plan both honours the culture of Gadi Country and pays respect to First Nations people through a space that is rich in culture. Barangaroo Harbour Park will include 1.85 hectares of reclaimed open space that allows people to relax, play, and connect with nature.

The MBM team, led by Director Richard Smith, provided a cost plan based on our firm’s unique appreciation of indigenous culture. Executive Quantity Surveyor Sam Noorwaite supported Richard and ensured the design remained within budget.

The completed space will provide a multi-functional recreation area for people within the Sydney CBD while creating a deeper reverence for First Nations culture. Key design concepts of the project include:

  • A timeless landscape with extensive planting and canopy cover
  • Nature play for all ages and abilities with interactive water play, meandering pathways, toilets and a kiosk
  • A series of significant public artworks that will be places of exploration, play, education, and celebration
  • A large event lawn at the northern end of the site for community and cultural events and ceremonies.

Speaking on MBM’s contributions, Richard noted, “This project wasn’t just about cost planning; it was an intellectually and emotionally rewarding experience. We were effectively charged with contributing to a development that prioritises the rich history of the Gadigal people.”
